Digital Project Presentation

This digital project was pretty fun! I enjoyed it, but it was pretty frustrating at times. This was a learning experience and it made me look at the bigger picture with social media’s effect on self esteem and body dissatisfaction.

We did about a 10 minute podcast with a presentation afterward, then question and answer followed the presentation. We all were a part of the podcast and I put it all together on audacity. Within the podcast we conducted a conversation amongst each other and added in interviews of girls we know from UMW to get their input. Lacey and Olevia put together the powerpoint. Lacey was sooooo lovely and made the tapewrite. Tapewrite is a website used to upload audio and put pictures along with it. We all presented and answered questions that were asked.

I feel we all worked together very well and our project turned out good. We felt very good about it afterward. I am glad that we all had the opportunity to do this project and work together as a group. It was very worth while.

Formal Presentation

whooooppps this is late… So, the formal presentation was a little more difficult than the first because we had to present our research and make it clear what we have found. I feel that I met the time requirement and thoroughly presented my research.  I presented my original research by showing my topic and why I was interested in it. I presented my thesis and explained the 3 main points on separate slides. I felt confident during the presentation and I felt that I made my research clear. I was able to clarify a question in the end and that seemed to be the only confusion. I felt good afterward, but at the same time it was still a little stressful. It is hard to present without reading parts of your essay. I would hope that people who did not quite understand would like to read my essay. This was a good experience having to present twice and it helped get us used to doing this in college.

overall status of my research paper

This research paper has been pretty rough. I feel like my first draft was a great start. I found a good mix of scholarly and non-scholarly sources. I feel that once I fix this first draft completely that I will be in a very good position and will have made a lot of progress. The structure of my paper has turned out to be great. I need to work on being specific about which study I am referring to in certain parts of my paper. I am going to try and add in the other side of things and compare non Facebook users to Facebook users. It would make a good argument by seeing both sides. I believe I will be pretty successful with my paper in the end. I am hoping to only have to complete a total of 3 drafts with the 3rd being my final copy. This has been a pretty tedious process, but it will all pay off in the end.

One Good Source..

yes, this is very late. I have gone back and forth changing my topic. I decided to choose how Facebook affects body image and body satisfaction in both men and women. It took me quite a while to finally decide. I was not sure how  specific I should go with the topic. So, this is what I have decided to do.

One good source I have found is a peer-reviewed journal titled “Facebook is Linked to Body Dissatisfaction: Comparing Users and Non-Users.” It is written by 6 different authors by the names of Samantha Stronge, Lara M. Greaves, Petar Milojev, Tim West-Newman, Fiona Kate Barlow, and Chris G. Sibley.

The main points in this article include:

  • Facebook users among men and women showed lower satisfaction with their body than non- Facebook users
  • the most dissatisfaction is mostly during the ages of youth (18 years old) to mid life (40 years old)
  • The Facebook users containing worse dissatisfaction are middle-aged woman

I am looking forward to digging deeper into this topic and finding out exactly why there is this idea that Facebook is causing people to look at themselves differently.

What to wear?

The research topic I am leaning most toward is the effect of social media on what we choose to wear. I am interested in this topic because it really shows how the internet has such a large impact on our identity. It is amazing how influenced people are when it comes to their wardrobe. My preliminary research showed me that I have quite a few options when it comes to sources and that this topic is pretty specific. I believe my topic is specific enough, but also  not too wide. The only concerns I have are possibly finding repeated information on my topic and/or not enough information. I hope to find useful information. I have gone on the library website and looked up my specific topic. I made sure to use the term “social media” since the database recognizes that term. All in all, I hope that I am able to do research on this topic without running into too much trouble.

Research Topic Ideas

Finding a topic to research is not going to be the easiest thing to do. There are a number of topics dealing with identity and the media that a person could do research on. This will be a tough decision, but I have narrowed it down to 3. The first topic that interest me is the tie between businesses and social media. Is it helping businesses or having a negative impact on them? I feel this may be too broad, but I would like to narrow it down somehow. It would be interesting to see the statistics and really go deep into finding out the real answer.

Secondly, I am really curious on how exposure to social media tells us what to wear. Many people look up to others to an extensive point. I for one choose my own style and most definitely do not looks to social media. It would be interesting to see how many people are truly that influenced by the media and let it affect what they wear.

Lastly, self-presentation being changed when on an anonymous website. It is amazing how people change their views and personality online when no one knows who is truly behind the screen. It would be cool to look more into this and the true reasons why people tend to do this.

Introduction about Deanna

My name is Deanna Mangano. I am from right outside of Richmond, VA. I have 2 sisters and a brother who I love and miss dearly.  I love UMW so far and I cannot wait to see what the next four years have to offer. I am in the nursing program here at Mary Wash. Once I obtain my BSN degree, I plan to further my education and get my masters in order to become a nurse practitioner.

I chose this FSEM because I really like learning about the internet. I am looking forward to learning about how it effects our daily lives, and what we can do to make the web better.

I hope to gain a lot from college. When I graduate I hope to have gained knowledge and facts that I will need in the real world, strategies to get me through life, and everything I will need to know to be successful in my field of study.  I want to be able to look back and know that every minute was worth it.
